“…as I have loved you…”
Though the lawyer only asked Jesus which was the great commandment in the law, Jesus continued, stating And the second is like it, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
We are to love one another! Jesus emphasized this further at the last supper when he proclaimed: “…so now I say to you. A new commandment I give to you, That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another” (John 13:33-35).
While other groups define themselves by skin color, language, group membership, national borders, economic or political views, Jesus builds a group recognized by their love for one another. More than that – they love one another sacrificially, as He loves them. Not only are we to love God first, and we are to love one another as he loves us, but Jesus also commands that we reach the world!
